2025 AT BROKEN HALO RESCUE The past year has been the usual rolller-coaster blend of traumatic and worrying situations, with many tears of sadness, frustration and anger (for us as well as the dogs!), as well as constant financial worries that have been the worst since BHR started ten years ago. But as always the bad stuff is easily outweighed when yet another rescue is successful. We are all a bit soppy here and would love to keep all the animals we rescue, theres not been a single one any of us would have refused a home (if we had any more space for even a tiny new one lol). Sometimes I am shocked and amazed at how such a small (and often young) creature has managed to stay alive until a rescuer got to them. Their resilience is astounding and inspirational. Their ability to trust and love another human even after the worst kinds of emotional, physical and mental abuse has brought me to tears so many times just in 2025 alone ive lost count. After the way theyve been treated is beyond inspirational For me, the dogs are like guru's, (Panda the techy volunteer) - I am grateful to learn so much about how they have coped. As someone who has suffered with mental health problems in the past, I have witnessed so many miraculous turn-arounds in their lives that thanks to them i began to believe it about myself. If a puppy of just a few months old can cope with such trauma and bounce back, often many times before they are rescued it helps me believe that I can too. When i said above that we dont accept any payment for our work, i didnt tell the whole truth, I take these lessons as payment, the few hours of joy when one of them is all set up and we say goodbye - is so much more valuable than any money. They dont waste time dwelling on the past. Because some humans have treated them horribly they dont assume every human is the same. Every new relationship begins without baggage. Their past experiences are not how they see their future. They dont waste time deciding whether to forgive those who caused them so much pain, they immerse themselves as fully as possible in their new lives, always trying to enjoy it more. They live in the moment, once they find a new home they move on and focus on being there, in that moment, its as if the love and security of a new home, being curled up on a sofa in a warm home with new family is all they want wipes the painful memories of their experiences and total elation, tears of joy knowing that more animals have been saved from lives of abuse, torture and illness - knowing they are safe is the only thing any of us take in retuern for our work, we all bear any personal costs related to our BHR work ourselves, none of us are paid anything, in fact none of us even ask for recompense for any expenses
